ORANGE _ Well-known local singing dynamo Julie Capone Smith has gathered the top musical talents at Mahar Regional School for "An Evening of Broadway." The program features 16 numbers from eight well-known New York shows with performances at 7 p.m. on March 14 and 15 and a 2 p.m. matinee on March 16."Our goal is to have more students involved in theater and the arts," said Smith, who is the show’s director and stage producer.
The Broadway review features 27 students performing numbers from "Grease," "Rent," "Annie," "Oliver," "Chicago," "Cabaret," "Annie Get your Gun," and "42nd Street."
In an effort to cut costs, Smith, who is Mahar’s music department director, cheerleading coach, and a class advisor, said she approached Jeff Boriseau, the technical director at Theater at the Mount in Gardner, where Smith has performed. She said she asked him if Mahar could use some of the Mount’s stage sets. "He told me to ‘come up and get what you want,’" Smith said, adding, "and he even offered to help out with the sound and lighting."
Art teacher Nina Belanger and her students have been working on sets, while many student and adult volunteers have been cleaning up, painting and repairing old sets, costumes, props and equipment.
A six-piece orchestra directed by Stephen Baineau will provide the music.
General admission is $7. Tickets are available at Lu’s Florist and Gift Shop, Orange House of Pizza, Donelan’s General Store and Periwinkle Place.
